0W20 engine oil
0W20 engine oil is a relatively thin oil. Nowadays more and more car manufacturers are prescribing thinner engine oil, like 5W20 or 0W-20.
Why 0W20 engine oil
0W-20 is very thin oil. At 40 degrees Celsius the viscosity of the oil is approximately 46 centistokes. Of course depending on product and brand. For example, 46 centistokes is a normal viscosity in hydraulic oils. Engines oils are ussually thicker. 10W40 for example is 100 centistokes at 40 degrees Celsius.
The biggest reason for car manufacturers to choose for a 0W-20 oil is fuel economy. With thinner oil the engine has less work pumping around the oil.
One very important consequence of thinner oil however is the lubrication. Thinner oil means less margin in protecting the engine parts.
Applicability of 0W-20
As said, more and more car manufacturers are choosing for 0W20 engine oil. Companies like Volkswagen, Toyota, Ford and Volvo already require, in some cars, a 0W-20 oil.
Mobil has a few different engine oils available with the viscosity of 0W-20. Every product has its own unique specs and qualities.
